About the Designs

“Cascades” necklaces are one-of-a-kind, hand knotted necklaces.  They are adjustable in length and composed of streams of silk ribbon, organdy ribbon, & fine cording strung with a variety of lampwork glass beads, other glass beads, enameled beads and ornaments.  These streams converge into a feature bead cluster and completed with an end tassel, embellished with coordinated drops and beads, providing additional movement and interest.

“Swags” necklaces are simplified versions of the “Cascades” and are also unique designs.  They are adjustable in length through either sliding pulls or a traditional clasp/loop. The lampwork glass beads, enamel beads and other ornaments are scattered along the ribbons & cords, which hang in a draped crescent around the neck.  In some styles, the ribbons & cords may be gathered at intervals into a feature bead or ornament to add a variety of scale and rhythm to these necklaces.

“Squiggles” necklaces are really just individual sterling silver beaded sculptures.  The silver wire is hand-worked, shaped and pressed, then threaded into hand etched & drilled silver tubes. The composition is completed with the addition of lampwork glass beads, furnace glass beads and other fine beads & ornaments stacked into a unique blending of color and texture

The chain is made of tiny bands of silver wrapped on stainless wire, creating a sculptural drape around the neck with a flexible and comfortable fit.  Three chain lengths - 16″, 18″ and 20″ - allow the necklace to have an individual fit…and by choosing all three, additional neckline styles can be accommodated.

About the Artist & the Process

During my years as a commercial interior designer of offices, hotels and resorts, I have always enjoyed the puzzle aspect of spatial design & its details, as well as the playing-with-the-rainbow aspect of determining the materials and colors of each project’s interior design.  Now I also solve puzzles and play with the rainbow on a smaller & more personal scale in my jewelry designs.

I create the jewelry using Lampwork beads as the focus and palette inspiration for each piece.  In many of my pieces I combine the beads from several Lampwork artists to increase the range of the palette & shapes…and also use the Lampwork beads as the secondary beads along the ribbons.  I then select the other secondary beads along with the rest of the components and build the design, using the groupings and rhythms of the shapes, colors & sizes to create the final composition of the piece. I often use Myuki Glass, Furnace Glass (or Cane Glass), Miracle Beads, and, whenever I can find them, great vintage beads.  Each piece is unique, even when a similar feature bead is the basis of the design or when the same palette is used.

About Lampwork Beads

The Lampwork Beads that I use as my feature beads, and often as the secondary beads, have been created by lampwork artists using an open torch flame to melt glass rods onto a mandril and work it into artful shapes, forms and textures. They manipulate the molten glass, using gravity and tools to form spheres and other configurations.  Then they embellish those beads with additional glass into artistic designs…floral, dots, raked, plunged.  Each of these artists create their special beads by not only manipulating the shapes and embellishments, but also by combining the various colors of the standard glass rods into wonderful hues and shades.  I obtain the beads directly from the many fine & talented lampwork artists I’ve found in the United States as well as Internationally.
